Area Modern Home and Lighting Expands To Downtown Durham
Area Modern Home and Lighting (515 S. Elm Street) is the go-to source for classic modern and contemporary furniture, lighting, art, accessories and gifts in the Greensboro area. The two story shop, located in the historic south elm district of Downtown Greensboro, offers 6,500 square feet of affordable, modern home furnishings and accessories.
Owner Mark Hewett recently expanded his operations with a satellite location in downtown Durham area. The Greensboro store, which opened in 2000, will remain the primary showroom, while the Durham site (320 E. Chapel Hill Street) will operate as a satellite store, offering select classic furniture and offering new pieces.
Area follows no trend, but establishes one. Designer Mark Hewett’s store creates custom
furniture and works with local manufacturers on modern designs. Furniture is produced locally and can be shipped within two weeks of order in a variety of fabrics. Area carries furniture from well-known manufacturers such as Calligaris, Blue Dot Gus and Pablo Lighting, as well as in-house designs. Complementing the timeless designs of upholstered goods, one can find fun “Fat Boy” bean bag furniture, FLOR carpeting, and graphic print pillows.
Owner and tastemaker Mark Hewett uses his creativity and vision to refurbish and design retro furniture pieces. Much of the featured furniture is locally made at Hewett’s furniture warehouse. “We don’t follow any trends, read any magazines, or have any influence from anything. I just try to get what I like from what I see, and what I think people will be interested in. I have had products here for years that no one wanted to buy, but when the same product was featured in a big magazine or on television they got the validation that they needed to feel comfortable to buy it,” said Hewett.
Area is not only chic, it is also affordable. “We’re a good value. You could buy this kind of product in major metropolitan cities but you would pay a premium price” Hewett explained, “we have a quick turn around and we’re a good value. Our price points are keen for the quality of the product.”
Area is open Tuesday- Saturday, from 11am to 6pm. Appointments are welcome for design consultations for residential and commercial projects, (336) 370-1050.
